Peter Maguire was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated from Denver’s John F. Kennedy High School and attended undergraduate school at the University of Colorado in Boulder. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree, a Masters Degree in Public Administration and his law degree from the University. He has been resident of Boulder County since 1972.
Pete began work at the Boulder County District Attorneys Office after being admitted to the Colorado Bar in 1978. After prosecuting misdemeanors in county court for two years and felonies in district court Pete was promoted to a Chief Deputy District Attorney position in 1985. In addition to prosecuting some of the most challenging and serious cases in the district, Pete supervised county court misdemeanor prosecutors and support staff. During his time at the District Attorneys Office he also supervised the district court division responsible for felony cases.
Pete carried an active caseload from 1980 through 2009. Many of his cases were high profile and received a great deal of publicity. He has successfully tried many cases from misdemeanors to complex homicides and multi-defendant cases.
In 2001 he was appointed to serve as the First Assistant District Attorney. In addition to general supervision and policy making duties, he was directly responsible for the supervision of the juvenile court prosecution unit. He has has been appointed to serve as a special prosecutor on conflict cases in Denver, Weld, and Larimer Counties. He has presented cases before the Boulder County Grand Jury and has been appointed as a Special Assistant Attorney General and presented cases before the Colorado state-wide Grand Jury.
In his administrative capacity, he was a member of the Colorado District Attorneys Council Governing Board from 2000 to 2008, and a member of the training committee for state prosecutors. Pete was a member of the executive board for the Boulder County Juvenile I.M.P.A.C.T. program, and has been involved in the planning and implementation process for community initiatives involving domestic violence and the various drug treatment courts. In 2009 he assisted the Colorado Attorney General and the Conference of Western Attorneys General on a pilot program to train prosecutors from the state of Baja, Mexico.
Pete was involved in coaching of youth softball, basketball, and baseball in the Longmont and Niwot area for many years.
